May 20: Bethesda Christian
The Lady Deaf Hoosiers traveled to Brownsburg to play on Bethesda Christian’s newly constructed softball field. ISD went up 1-0 early, but ISD’s defensive errors during the game allowed BC score ten unearned runs and cost ISD the game.
Kerisha Rogers pitched 3 2/3 innings and Kate Fetzer came in, in relief.
May 20: Eminence
The final game of the ISD softball season found the Lady Deaf Hoosiers traveling to the beautiful farm country of Eminence, Indiana to play the Eminence Lady Eels softball team. ISD went up 4-0 in the top of the first. Eminence answered back with five runs in the bottom of the inning. In the second, ISD scored three more and one in the third, but it wasn’t enough as a strong-hitting line up put the Lady Eels on top to stay.
May 12: Southwestern
The Lady Deaf Hoosier softball team won its first game of the season yesterday against Southwestern High School. The score was 6-0. This is the first victory in ISD’s history for High School softball.
Congratulations to the Lady Deaf Hoosier softball team for the job well done!
May 11: Cambridge City Lincoln
The Lady Deaf Hoosiers traveled an hour east to Cambridge City, Indiana to play the Golden Eagles of Lincoln High School. Under sunny skies at the Dublin park field and missing several key players, the Indiana Deaf coaches had to shift the defense around to fill in the gaps, asking some players to play positions they weren’t quite familiar with. The lone run for ISD came in the first inning on a pass ball by the Lincoln pitcher with our runner on third base. That put ISD ahead for the only time in the game. Kerisha Rogers had 3 Ks in four innings of work in the circle. Kate Fetzer came on in the fifth inning to record 2 strike-outs. Offensively, Rogers, Fetzer and Gibson produced the only hits for the Lady Deaf Hoosiers against a strong Lincoln pitcher.
Highlights of the game were Jori Gibson’s first hit of the season, Hillary Peter’s snagging two fly balls in center, Kerisha Rogers throwing change-ups for strikes, Kayla McDaniels playing SS and Sharon Baker’s famous cookies that she was so nice to make for our team!
Although recent scores may not reflect it, the Indiana Deaf softball team is improving with each game played. The coaches are proud of the continuing progress these players are making.
May 7: Morristown
The Lady Deaf Hoosiers remained positive and upbeat, looking for their first win of the season against an experienced Yellow Jacket team. Morristown jumped out to an early 5-0 lead going into the third inning. ISD held them to five runs through the 3rd and 4th innings. In the 5th inning, the walls caved in as solid hits and costly errors led the Morristown team to the win.
May 4: City Tourney vs Ritter
It was a “first-ever” for Indiana School for the Deaf varsity softball team to participate in the Indianapolis City League Tournament. After a Saturday scheduled game was rained-out, the Lady Deaf Hoosiers finally got a chance to play against the #4 seeded Cardinal Ritter Raiders on Monday at Shambaugh Field.
To give credit to the Ritter team, they hit the ball well, but nerves must have taken over the Lady Deaf Hoosiers as costly errors greatly aided the Lady Raiders in the score. Kate Fetzer was in the circle and had four strike outs in the loss.
April 24-25: Hoy Tournament @ Fremont:
Indiana Deaf played in three games on Saturday, April 24 vs. Model Secondary School for the Deaf (MSSD), California School for the Deaf (Fremont) and Texas School for the Deaf.
The final scores were:
Game 1: MSSD 5 ISD 4 (pool play)
Game 2: CSD 5 ISD 0 (pool play)
Game 3: Texas 7 ISD 2 (championship round)
For a young team with only two games under their belt coming into the tournament, the Lady Deaf Hoosiers softball team was competitive in all three games. The team earned the respect of onlookers who watched us play, due to our work ethic, all-out effort and “never quit” approach to the game. Several people commented that they expect to see ISD come on strong next year when the team has had more game experience. We welcome the challenge of competing at the Hoy Tournament at the Texas School for the Deaf in 2010 with the goal of improving on our 2009 record and making it into the championship round.
April 22: Noblesville Freshmen Team:
The Lady Deaf Hoosiers took on the 4A Noblesville Freshman team and came away with a loss. Kerisha Rogers had three strike outs in four innings of work in the circle. Kate Fetzer had two Ks in relief. At the plate, Fetzer had two hits and two walks. Rogers went 2-4 with two doubles. Courtney Morrison went 2-4 with two singles. Amanda Phillips had an RBI single in the 3rd inning. Other Deaf Hoosiers on base included Kayla McDaniels and Megan Bernella
April 7: Bethesda Christian
Bethesda Christian of Brownsburg defeated the Lady Deaf Hoosiers by a score of
7 – 5 in ISD’s first game of the season. The star of the game had to be the weather, with gusty winds and less than spring-like temperatures hovering right around 40 degrees.
Like games with Lady Eagles at the Middle School level the past few years, it was a back-and-forth game and very competitive. Both teams had decent pitching, made contact with the ball and used base running to score runs. In the end, it was not enough for the Lady Deaf Hoosiers coming up short by a score of 7-5.
The bright spots in the game were the levels of improvement seen with all the athletes from the beginning of practice just three short weeks ago to present. We will keep working hard and improving our skills to be the best team we can be.
Our next scheduled game is Monday, April 20 at home vs. the Eminence Lady Eels. Game is set for a five o’clock start.
