Athletics: MS Girls Basketball: 2006-2007: Recap

February 26 IISL Tournament: Kingsway
We played #2 seed Kingsway last night. They were a very fast team. We had to play a tight defense as they had a few strong inside post players. In the 1st half we were down 5 to 21. Oddly, neither team scored a point in 2nd and 4th quarters. In the 2nd half, we played better with less turnovers and better back post reading. We lost 16 to 40.

Megan Bernella: 3 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block, 1 assist
Jenna Smith: 4 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals
Kate Fetzer: 5 points, 3 steals, 2 rebounds, 1 block
Tiara Finch: 4 points, 5 rebounds
Jessica Holsinger: 3 rebounds
TraciAnn Hoglind: 2 rebounds, 1 assist

Coach Aimee Bippus is very proud of her girls with a wonderful season ending with 6 wins and 8 losses. Coaches Karen and Aimee are looking forward to next year!

February 20: St. Richards
We went to St. Richard for our last away game before the IISL Tournament. Our players were more than ready to play with them after they beat us 2 weeks ago in a very hot game. We knew their strengths and weaknesses. We did well in the first half with a half-time score of 11 to 6. Coach Bippus told the players to control the ball, do what we needed to do, etc. Coach Bippus guessed that the pressure got to them; our girls rushed the ball trying to make points but ended up making too many turnovers which hurt us. St. Richards started to move closer and closer to our score. In the 3rd quarter, we were still leading 13 to 10. Turnovers hurt us in the 4th quarter. St. Richards scored 6 to our 2. We lost 15 to 16. The girls took it hard. We learned from our mistakes; there are more games ahead of us. We will play #2 Kingsway in the IISL Tourney on Monday at 5:45 pm (NOT 5:00 pm).

Megan Bernella: 2 points, 4 steals
Jenna Smith: 1 point, 3 rebounds, 2 assists
Kate Fetzer: 6 points, 5 steals
Jessica Holsinger: 2 points, 2 rebounds
Tiara Finch: 2 points, 8 rebounds
Kayla McDaniels: 2 points

February 15: Traders Point
We played well in the first half and we led 27 to 6. My team seemed to become "easy on themselves" and let them score some points. They made 13 points in the 3rd quarter. One of their players made 3 points shot for 4 times in the 2nd half. We stayed with the control and won the game 47 to 28.

Megan Bernella: 19 points, 6 steals
Jenna Smith: 4 points, 8 rebounds
Kate Fetzer: 12 points, 5 rebounds, 8 steals
TraciAnn Hoglind: 2 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals
Kayla McDaniels: 2 points, 2 steals
Tiara Finch: 8 points, 8 rebounds

February 8: St. Richards
St. Richards came to our last home game last night. They only had 5 players but 2 girls from 5/6 team joined on the bench. They had 3 tall players but we had the advantage of our speed. We stole many balls but unfortunately we missed many easy lay up shots and 6 out of 18 free throws that really hurt our statistics. It was hot, but we lost 22 to 25. We need to work on how to control ourselves during stressful moments of playing time. We outscored them in the 1st half but they outscored us in the 2nd.

Kate Fetzer: 4 points, 3 steals, 4 assists
Jenna Smith: 10 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals
Tiara Finch: 4 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals
Megan Bernella: 4 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 steal
TraciAnn Hoglind: 2 steals
Kayla McDaniels: 1 steal

February 7: International
We went to International with good feelings. We were ready to play with our good warm ups. We beat them at our first game so we tried to do the same method as before. It still worked well with woman to woman defense and 1-3-1 defense. We started off little cold in the 1st quarter, we were down 4 to 10. We fired up in the 2nd quarter and made 10 points while we zeroed their points. We led in the halftime 14 to 10. We played with stability for the 2nd half. In the close end of the game, we led 28 to 21, but we made some little silly mistakes and let them score another 4 points. We stalled the game in the last few seconds. The score buzzed and we led 28 to 25.

January 31: Park Tudor
In the 1st half, we did well with our defense and offense plays and keep close score with P.T. We were down 11 in the halftime and I believed that we can catch up just like Colts and Patriots. Anything can happen. But unfortunately in the 2nd half, we choked with many of their blocks. They probably made 20 blocks on us. They had 2 really tall players. We didn't give up and continued to find a better spot to shoot. We only had 2 subs on bench.

Jenna Smith: 5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks
Kate Fetzer: 1 point, 5 steals
Megan Bernella: 3 points, 4 steals, 2 assists
Tiara Finch: 2 points, 6 rebounds
TraciAnn Hoglind: 3 rebounds
Jessica Holsinger: 3 rebounds

January 25: Bethesda Christian
We played against Bethesda Christian at our home court. We started off very well in the 1st half with many steals. We decided to do woman-to-woman defense on them which helped a lot. Coach Bippus saw the girls improve some of their skills with which they had struggled in the past. Our girls played hard the entire game, and all of the bench players played more in the 4th quarter so they could develop more playing experience. We led 19 to 7 at halftime and defeated them 31 to 21.

Kate Fetzer: 5 points, 3 assists
Jenna Smith: 12 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals
Tiara Finch: 5 rebounds, 2 steals
Megan Bernella: 5 points, 2 rebounds
Jessica Holsinger: 3 rebounds
TraciAnn Hoglind: 7 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 assist
Courtney Morrison: 2 rebounds
Kayla McDaniels: 2 points

January 18: Greenwood Christian Academy
We had our first away game at Greenwood Christian Academy. We arrived late and had a short warm-up. But we had a positive and best attitude with a few warm ups. In the first half we were little tense and it wasn't the team that Coach Bippus knew of. After halftime we played much better and did what we were supposed. We were down by one point, 5 to 6 at the half. It was a very low score. Both teams missed many shots. We stopped their high scorer with eight points since she didn't make any points in the 4th quarter. We beat them 17 to 8.

Megan Bernella: 6 points, 4 steals
Kate Fetzer: 4 points, 4 steals and 4 assists
Jenna Smith: 5 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals
Tiara Finch: 2 points, 14 reboundss
TraciAnn Hoglind: 4 rebounds
Jessica Holsinger: 3 rebounds
Kayla McDaniels: 1 assist

January 16: St. John Lutheran
It was our 5th straight home game. We had a good and exciting game last night against St. John Lutheran. The score was seesaw throughout the quarters. At the halftime, we led 8 to 5. It was a low scoring game. We tried different defensive plays to find which defense would be good against the team. In the 4th quarter we were up 25 to 23. We were under pressure, but the girls controlled the ball to avoid any turnovers or steals. It was very hot game for us!!

Megan Bernella: 4 points & 3 rebounds
Kate Fetzer: 4 points
Jenna Smith: 11 points & 4 rebounds
Tiara Finch: 6 points & 6 rebounds

January 9: Orchard
After 2 weeks of vacation, Coach Bippus saw that the girls weren't ready for the game last night. Due to their lack of practice and out of shape our team was affected badly. We only made 5 team rebounds and had lots of turnovers. We have lots to work on to get them in shape before our 5th game next week. As always, Orchard is our rival team and we couldn't stop their fast hands and great defensive moves. In the 1st quarter, we choked with their quickness, and they led 12 to 0. But in the 2nd quarter we managed to stop them from scoring. At halftime they led 12 to 2. In the 3rd and 4th quarters, we just gave up.

Kate Fetzer: 4 points, 3 steals
Tiara Finch: 2 rebounds
Jenna Smith: 1 block
Jessica Holsinger: 1 rebound
Megan Bernella: 1 rebound
Veronika Williams: 1 rebound

December 14: Trinity Lutheran
For the 3rd time in a row, we hosted Trinity Lutheran on our home court. They had 3-4 tall players which was to our disadvantage, but we managed to keep the score 0-0 in the 1st quarter. That meant we did a good job defensively. At the half, we were down by 6 points - 3 to 9. We kept a tight defense inside the low post. They still kept driving through with their heights. They often had 2nd and 3rd chances at rebounds. In the 3rd quarter, we led scoring 6 to 5. We had foul troubles, and the players started to wear out before the 4th quarter. We were 9 to 14. In the 4th, we basically gave up and let them made 17 points. We lost 18 to 31. Box outs and rebounds are the key and we really need to work on them.

Kate Fetzer: 5 points, 3 steals, and 3 assists
Jenna Smith: 9 points 7 rebounds, and 1 block
Tiara Finch: 4 points and 2 rebounds
Megan Bernella: 3 rebounds and 2 steals
Jessica Holsinger: 3 rebounds
TraciAnn Hoglind: 1 rebound and 1 steal

December 12: Calvary Lutheran
We played Calvary Lutheran here on our court. To our surprise it was no question that the opponent team was very solid and a good team. We struggled to stop them for all four quarters, but we didn't give up. We now know that there are many more good teams out there. They had 3 tall players that was their biggest advantage. We were down 8 to 25 at halftime and ended with a final score of 18 to 39. We learned that we need to be quicker, smarter and have a better team concept. We saw our weaknesses and will work to improve them. In general, we did good but must continue our desire to improve and win as much as possible.

K. Fetzer- 6 pts, 3 steals, 2 assists
T. Finch-4 pts, 6 rebounds
J. Holsinger- 2 pts, 2 rebounds
T. Hoglind - 6 pts, 1 rebound, 1 steal

December 7: International
We hosted our first game here at our home against International last Thursday night. We were hesitant to play our first game but we played so well in the whole 4 quarters. We opened with 2-1-2 defense to find out their weakness and changed to 1-3-1 defense. It was our strength to use 1-3-1 and it stopped them well. We led in halftime with 14 to 6. We played beautifully in the 3rd quarter 24 to 11. I let the sub players in to have more experience in playing time in the 4th quarter. We ended with 32 to 20.

M. Bernella - 5 pts & 1 steal
K. Fetzer - 5 pts, 2 steals & 4 assts.
J. Smith - 8 pts, 4 rebs & 2 assts.
T. Finch - 8 pts, 14 rebs
J. Holsinger - 2 pts
T. Hoglind - 3 pts
H. Peters - 1 pt & 1 reb
