Athletics: MS Boys Basketball: 2007-2008: Recap (5/6th)

January 29 IISL Tournament: St. Richards
The boys were not themselves in the game due to tournament mentality. Nothing went our way. We missed too many easy opportunities. Was the rim smaller? Travis Collett, Jeremy Dean, and Chace Shaffer each had 6 points. Thanks to 5/6th boys for making this program possible with 7 wins which is the best record in 4 years. Good luck to Travis, Jeremy, Chace, and Malcolm Taylor as they move to the next 7/8th level next year. Thanks to Austin, DJ, Kenny, Martin, and Zack for being hard working players on the team. It sure was a fun learning experience for the boys.

January 23: St. Richards
This was the last game of the regular season. We went out with a blast in the regular season ending it with a victory over St. Richard's. We shut them out in the first quarter; their best player and other key players seemed like they didn't even show up. Jeremy Dean scored a season high 18 points and 14 rebounds. Travis Collett scored 12 points and 14 rebounds. Malcolm Taylor scored a season high 8 points with 11 rebounds. DJ Smith added 7 points and 4 assists. Chace Shaffer got 5 points; Austin Phillips got a 3 pointer right before the halftime buzzer. DJ Smith also got a 3 pointer right before the end of 3rd quarter. The coaches told the boys that it was a very impressive win. We will play St. Richard's again this Monday for IISL tourney at St. Richard's. We hope we will play flawlessly again with high confidence.

January 22: Hasten Hebrew
All nine players had the opportunity to play in the game. Jeremy Dean and Travis Collett each had 12 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. DJ Smith followed with 9 points (all in the 2nd half) and 5 rebounds. Chace Shaffer got 6 points with 4 steals. Malcolm Taylor had 5 points and3 rebounds. Kenny Long and Austin Phillips each added 4 points. Martin Linares and Zack Kremer contributed some good defense with 3 rebounds each. We led 22-7 at halftime. The coaches told the boys that our goal was to score more than 50 points and we did. We will play our very last home game today at Come and root for us as we play St. Richard again hoping to pay them back for the loss last week by four.

January 16: St. Richards
It was really a heartbreaking loss for us. We led 19-14 at the halftime. Jeremy Dean fouled out in the middle of 3rd quarter. Jeremy led all scorers with 11 points and 7 rebounds. Chace Shaffer added 6 points along with 5 rebounds. Travis Collett chipped in 4 points with 5 rebounds. Kenny Long, Malcolm Taylor, Austin Phillips, and DJ Smith each had 2 points. We were confident that we are going to win the game but all of a sudden it turned upside down near the end of game. The coaches told the boys, "That's Basketball. You really never know until the game is over."

January 11: St. John Lutheran
What an important win for us! We were tied 17-17 going into 4th quarter. DJ Smith made 4 consecutive free throws, and our full press defense secured our victory. We have only 3 more games to play plus the IISL tournament. If we can win 3 more, then we will have a winning season. DJ Smith had 8 points and 3 steals Travis Collett scored 6 points with 13 rebounds Chace Shaffer had 6 points 10 rebounds. Jeremy Dean scored 6 points and 8 rebounds. Austin Phillips had 1 point, and Malcolm Taylor got 3 rebounds.

January 9: Kingsway Christian
After a long layoff we did not play as well as we should. Our defense shut them out in the 3rd quarter. We scored only 7 points after halftime. We did not do any fast transitions. Our players had 6-5-4-3-2 points as a team. Travis Collett (6) and Malcolm Taylor (5) both had 11 rebounds. DJ Smith had 4, Chace Shaffer 3, and Austin Phillips 2.

December 13: Trader Point
Guess who was the leading scorer? Austin Phillips got 5 with a 3 point shot. Travis Collett, Jeremy Dean, Chace Shaffer, and DJ Smith each added 4. Merle Baldridge and Malcolm Taylor chipped in 2. If we could get the ball inside the paint more then we could have won. Halftime, we were down by two, 17-19. Jeremy Dean and Merle Baldridge both were fouled out in early 4th quarter. Rebounds: Travis (11), Jeremy (9), Chace (4), and DJ (4).

December 12: Orchard
Like I said, we were playing powerhouse Orchard. We could do nothing after DJ Smith (4 rebounds and 2 assists) first scored a free throw in the very opening minutes, 1-9 in first quarter, 8-21 by halftime...16-33 by 3rd quarter. Jeremy Dean scored 12 and pulled down 17 rebounds. The rest did not score enough to help ISD. Chace Shaffer added 4 points and 10 rebounds. Merle Baldridge (4 rebounds and 3 steals) had 3, Austin Phillips got 2, Kenny Long and DJ Smith had one apiece. Martin Linares, Zach Kremer, Travis Collett, and Malcolm Taylor all did play hard on defense but Orchard are too talented with inside and outside shooting, one player had 4 treys.

December 6: Irvington
We led 30-5 by halftime and scored a season high 56 points with four players contributed double figures. All players scored except for one. Travis Collett continued to play super with a career high 14 points and crashed 15 boards/5 steals/2 assists. Jeremy Dean twisted ankle early in the game but still managed with 12 points and 10 rebounds/2 assists. DJ Smith got a career best 11 points, 2 assists, 3 steals/4 rebounds. Merle Baldridge added 10 points with some nice medium range shots and had 3 steals. Chace Shaffer pulled down a career best 16 rebounds along with 4 points. Kenny Long and Zack Kremer each put in a basket. Austin Phillips added one. They all played hard; awesome defense. Coach told the boys that they are ready to play for 7/8th someday since they played with a bigger size ball. As a team we had 6 out of 19 free throws that probably was caused by a bigger ball.

December 5: Sycamore
Prior to the game, there were no referees available due to a mix up, so one of the opponent's father volunteered. With only one referee and good enough we got countless bad or missed calls. Our boys were ready to give up but we rallied back after being down 1-12 in the opening minutes. We were just down by two during halftime, 16-18. Travis Collett played his best game with 12 points and 7 boards. Jeremy Dean added 11 points and 15 boards/4 steals. Playmaker DJ Smith had 3 points along 2 assists/3 steals. Chace Shaffer got 3 points and 13 boards. Austin Phillips and Merle Baldridge along 6 boards collected two points apiece and Kenny Long got one. In our hearts, we knew we "won" the game.

November 30: Trinity Lutheran
We started with 10-4 first quarter lead and never looked back but it was still a hard fought game. 7 ISD players scored that showed a good teamwork. Jeremy Dean was the leading scorer with 15 points and had 16 rebounds. Merle Baldridge scored 8 points and 2 assists. DJ Smith scored 5 and dished out 5 assists. Chace Shaffer also had 11 rebounds and 5 points with a 3 pointer late in the 4th quarter that secured our lead to victory. Austin Phillips and Malcolm Taylor (8 rebounds) both contributed 4 points. Travis Collett also scored 2. It was a nice win in front of our thrilled home fans. The boys wore red neckties all day which were given by Coach Smith. It surely helps them develop a strong bonding. It really inspired ISD Community.

November 28: Bethesda Christian
We were in the game all the way until the 4th quarter with 3 minutes remaining. All of sudden we lost it. Jeremy had double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Chace Shaffer added 7 points and 6 rebounds. Travis Collett contributed with a splendid defense pulling down 9 rebounds along with 2 points. Only 3 players scored. Their top player was held to 12 points when we used a box and one defense. We also used a zone defense for the first time. I think we did pretty well giving up only 36 points, but we need more offensive output.

November 21: Park Tudor
We started down with score of 1-17 in first quarter, we were wondering if it's going to be duplicated from last year with final score of 1-62. We were thankful, it didn't. We roared back by 8 by halftime. We trailed all the way until down by 3 in 4th quarter and could not catch up. The boys played hard all the way and we were thankful for our team effort. Merle Baldridge led with 12 points along with 5 steals, Jeremy Dean scored 11 and 9 rebounds, DJ Smith with 6 points and 4 rebounds, Austin Phillips and Chace Shaffer (4 rebounds) chipped in 4, and Travis Collett had 2. We also are thankful for averaging 38 points the last four games. We could have gotten more but due to many easy missed baskets.

November 16: Calvary Lutheran
It was a very see-saw game. Jeremy Dean had a triple double with 16 points, 19 rebounds, and 11 steals. Chace Shaffer also added 14 points with 6 rebounds and 6 steals. Merle Baldridge and Austin Phillips added 7 points apiece. DJ Smith added 5 (all in the 2nd quarter) before he got injured and did not play in the second half. Austin got all 7 points in the 4th quarter which saved us with two nice middle range shots that kept us in the game. We improved our game playing against a full press.

November 14: Trader Point
We started off good in first quarter leading 9-8. They started to press us then we got down 11-26 by halftime so we need to work on break the press. They are also a good shooting team. Jeremy Dean had double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. DJ Smith scored 5 points. Chace Shaffer and Kenny Long both added 4 points. Travis Collett chipped in 2. The boys gave themselves a hard look as a team. The boys really wanted to win the game in their eyes that really appreciate the coaches Smith and The coaches told the boys the season is still young and we are still experimenting players' different positions.

November 7: International
The 5/6th grade boys surprised us all. Chace Shaffer scored 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds/5 steals. Jeremy Dean also scored 9 and pulled down 12 rebounds/6 steals. Newcomer Point Guard DJ Smith added 7 points along with 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Newcomer Austin Phillips scored 6 points. Merle Baldridge and Malcolm Taylor each added 2. Kenny Long got a free throw. It was a fantastic team effort with plenty of fast breaks. We led 17-7 by halftime. The boys played with passion. We went to charity stripes 31 times and made only 11. We need to work on free throws. As a team, we only made 11 fouls.
