November 2: Cardinal Ritter (Sectional #37 title)

The Sectional Championship game was held at Roncalli High School between the two top teams in our sectionals (district). The game began on our favor, as we exploded offensively and defensively in the first half. We scored a touchdown, which was the only one in the game, as we battled for the title. Ritter moved the ball time and time again into the red zone, but our defense wouldn’t allow them to score. However, Ritter managed to score a touchdown and by halftime, we were up 8-7. As the second half kicked off, we just could not hold Ritter. They exploded offensively and moved the ball, scoring more touchdowns against us. We fought long and hard against the #8 ranked team in the state, and only limited them to 27 points, versus the 61 points they accumulated last year. Unfortunately, the game was not on our side and we just couldn’t grab the title. The following players contributed in the game: Paulone, 1 of 7 for 54 yards and 2 INTs; Paulone, 11 caries for 48 yards; Beaver, 8 carries for 45 yards and 1 TD; Abrahamson, 8 carries for 31 yards; Dall, 5 carries for 17 yards. Defensively, we made many key tackles and the following players contributed: Paulone, 7 tackles; Beaver, 5 tackles; Dall, 13 tackles; Abrahamson, 11 tackles; Slone, 10 tackles; Hazzard, 6 tackles; DeLuna, 14 tackles; Alcozer, 7 tackles; Jordan, 3 tackles; Fetzer, 8 tackles; Christian, 2 tackles; Howle, 2 tackles. Although we did not claim the Sectional title, we made our mark in the state of Indiana and in ISD history. We are the best football team ever in ISD history, with a final record of 9 wins and 3 losses. We have made 9 consecutive wins, the most of any football team in ISD. We have beat teams that decimated us last year. We have made our rank in the state, being #16 in the state Class 1A. We have so many more accomplishments – our team ended the season on a very high note, despite the loss against Ritter. We want to thank all the fans and people who have supported us all the way throughout the season! It has been one long and fun ride!

October 26: Lutheran (Sectional #37)

Indiana Deaf hosted Lutheran for the semifinals of our Sectionals Tournament at home. Our boys were raging, full of fire and spirit as we were ready to finish unfinished business. Lutheran visited us for Game 2 during our regular season and they led at halftime, 14-0, when we had to stop the game due to inclement weather. As irritated as we were, we were looking forward to play them again, in the Sectionals tournament. And it happened… the Indiana Deaf team refused to let up an 8 game winning streak and were looking to gain another victory, deservedly so, against Lutheran. The game kicked off and we scored immediately with a successful two-point conversion to gain a lead of 8-0 within minutes of the first quarter. Lutheran plowed toward the end zone; however, they failed attempts for a successful touchdown, with us forcing them to use a field goal. By the end of the 1st quarter, the score was 8-3. And that’s all Lutheran could handle – our hard-hitting defense shut them down, forcing 1-2-3 and outs and we held them scoreless. Scoring another touchdown, by halftime, we were up 16-3. After inspiring pep talks and the flying emotions of the coaching staff, the team went out and exploded in the second half, gaining more touchdowns. Lutheran couldn’t move the ball against our hard-nosed defense as we continued to shut them down and send a message – that we are better than they thought. We sent Lutheran home, closing the book on their football season, with a final score of 36-3. We made history tonight; we are the first ISD team to have a record of 9-2; we are the first ISD team to ever advance twice in the Sectionals; we are the first ISD team ever to advance to the Sectional Championship game. Next Friday, we play against Ritter, who beat Scecina in the semifinals. This game is a rematch, with us boiling over the loss against them last year. We intend to pound them, win the Sectional championship, and advance into the Regional, which again will be the first time for an Indiana Deaf football team ever to do so. The following players contributed in the game: Paulone, 10 of 19 for 156 yards, 1 INT; Paulone, 14 carries for 228 yards, 3 TDs; Beaver, 9 carries for 35 yards, 2 TDs; Dall, 3 carries for 13 yards; Christian, 4 receptions for 78 yards; Beaver, 4 receptions for 43 yards; Dall, 2 receptions for 35 yards; DeLuna, 16 tackles; Beaver, 11 tackles; Slone, 9 tackles; Hazzard, 9 tackles; Dall, 8 tackles; Alcozer, 8 tackles; Fetzer, 10 tackles; Christian, 8 tackles; Paulone, 4 tackles; Jordan, 3 tackles; Olvey, 2 tackles; Abrahamson, 3 tackles; Howle, 2 tackles; Martinez-Cruz, 2 tackles; Snead, 1 tackle. Dall and Paulone each had one interception. Lutheran was limited to 99 rushing yards and 91 passing yards. Come and support us next Friday, as we play against Ritter for the Sectional Championship title!

October 19: North Decatur (Sectional #37)

Indiana Deaf hosted North Decatur for the first round in the state playoffs – Sectionals Tournament. Our boys were fired up as they were ready to pound North Decatur into the ground and send them home! The game began with us on defense – ND managed to move the ball; however, a hard-nosed hit forced a fumble and we recovered. We plowed forward into the red zone and then we fumbled! Our defense forced a turnover; Terris Hazzard intercepted the ball for a touchdown! From there on, we blasted forward, moving the ball and creating touchdowns. By halftime, we were up 16-0. As we came into the second half, we executed even better on offense and scored. Our defense continued to shut them out, forcing 1-2-3 and outs, giving our offense squad more time and opportunity to move the pigskin and score touchdowns. As victors, we ended the game 44-16. Both of their touchdowns were scored against our second squad, of whom we played to give them playoff game experience. North Decatur went home stunned and quiet. We celebrated as we advanced in the second round of the playoffs! The following players contributed on offense and defense: Abrahamson, 15 carries for 168 yards and 2 TDs; Paulone, 16 carries for 131 yards; Beaver, 13 carries for 89 yards and 1 TD; Dall, 5 carries for 19 yards and 1 TD; Paulone, 6 of 12 for 115 yards, 1 INT, and 1 TD; Abrahamson, 3 receptions for 67 yards and 1 TD; Crace, 1 reception for 19 yards and 1 TD; Mast, 1 reception for 14 yards; Beaver, 10 tackles and 1 sack; Dall, 7 tackles and 1 interception; Abrahamson, 9 tackles; DeLuna, 9 tackles; Alcozer, 8 tackles and 1 ½ sacks and 2 pass deflects; Fetzer, 9 tackles.

October 13: Mississippi Deaf

We hosted Mississippi Deaf for our Homecoming this past Saturday. Mississippi only came with 14 players to play against us. Our boys were fired up as they wanted to win on their Homecoming. The game kicked off and by the end of the first quarter, we were up 30-0. By halftime, we were up 52-0. Our boys played a perfect offense and defense game. During the second half, our second squad got an opportunity to play a lot. As the game resumed, Mississippi were finally able to score a touchdown and we scored two more touchdowns to end the game. The game concluded with us winning our Homecoming, with a final score of 65-6. All our respect goes out to Mississippi as they were willing to travel and play us, despite the very small number of players. They played with big heart and huge class. The following Indiana Deaf players contributed immensely: Gabriel Paulone, 10 of 12 for 203 yards and 5 TDs; Tyler Crace, 1 of 1 for 9 yards and 1 TD; Jarvis Beaver, 1 carry for 4 yards and 1 TD; Keren Martinez-Cruz, 10 carries for 73 yards and 2 TDs; A.J. Christian, 2 receptions for 74 yards and 1 TD; Selwyn Abrahamson, 2 receptions for 26 yards and 1 TD; Jarvis Beaver, 2 receptions for 38 yards and 1 TD; Tyler Crace, 1 reception for 3 yards and 1 TD; Tony Dall, 1 reception for 12 yards; Terris Hazzard, 1 reception for 20 yards and 1 TD; Jose Mast, 1 reception for 30 yards; Robert Goolsby, 1 reception for 9 yards. We have ended our regular season 7-2, with a streak of 7 wins!

October 5: Guerin Catholic

We hosted Guerin Catholic last Friday for our eighth game. We began the game fully fired up and determined to beat Guerin at their own game. The first half proved to be on our side, as we exploded offensively with three touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Our defense shut them down and capped their attempts at moving the ball. By halftime, we were up 20-0. Coming into the third quarter, Guerin fought back and cut the deficit to 20-14. They played a good third quarter against us; however, we refused to give up the battle. We continued to move the ball, but were plagued by foolish penalties that cost us field position. Despite penalties, our team fought long and hard to maintain the lead, and we gained two more touchdowns and two-point conversions. Guerin had one more touchdown against us and that was the last one of the night. The game concluded with us as victors, 36-21. Dan Iafrato, Guerin's star running back, only rushed for a mere 102 yards, less than half of his average of 200-250+ yards per game. Our dedicated defense squad put out key tackles, sacks, and a couple of key interceptions that shut them down and gave us momentum. An IHSAA Sports cameraman shot the whole game, with an Indy Star reporter taking notes. As the game concluded, an Indy Star reporter interviewed Head Coach Michael Paulone and Quarterback Gabriel Paulone. We have now produced a 6-win streak that is nowhere to be stopped! The following players contributed to the game: Abrahamson, 16 carries for 140 yards and 2 touchdowns; Paulone, 14 carries for 75 yards and 3 touchdowns; Beaver, 7 carries for 33 yards; Martinez-Cruz, 1 carry for 9 yards; Dall, 2 carries for 19 yards; Christian, 3 receptions for 72 yards; Abrahamson, 1 reception for 3 yards; Beaver, 1 reception for 28 yards; Crace, 1 reception for 5 yards. Paulone was also 6 for 8 for 108 yards passing. We had a total of 40 carries for 276 yards. We racked up a total of 384 offensive yards.

September 29: Edinburgh

Indiana Deaf pounded Edinburgh 56-0 for its FIFTH straight win, leading us to 5-2 overall, the best winning record since 1989, when it was 4-4 back then. Our offense had better poise and controlled the entire game. This was also our first defense shut-out. We limited Edinburgh -6 rushing yards and 46 passing yards, giving them a total of only 40 net offense yards for the entire game. Touchdowns were scored by Selwyn Abrahamson, Gabriel Paulone, A.J. Christian, and Jarvis Beaver. Abrahamson had 7 carries for 114 yards; Beaver had 8 carries for 39 yards; Paulone had 17 carries for 109 yards; Tony Dall had 2 carries for 8 yards; Mark Alcozer had 1 carry for 6 yards; Keren Martinez-Cruz had 4 carries for 23 yards. Paulone was 11 for 19 (1 interception) for 194 yards passing. Christian had 2 receptions for 95 yards; Abrahamson had 4 receptions for 50 yards; Beaver had 3 receptions for 40 yards; Tyler Crace had 2 receptions for 9 yards. We produced a balanced attack against Edinburgh. We produced 285 rushing yards, and 194 passing yards, making our total offense yards up to 479 for the game. Our defense decimated Edinburgh all night and shut them down, giving them only minimal opportunity to rush or pass. Overall, our team played very well as this was a game where our offense and defense were in full control.

September 21: Covington

The Deaf Hoosiers visited Covington last Friday for our sixth game. This game was probably one of our best games we have played to date. The game started with us in kickoff return; we blasted past Covington for our first touchdown, and along came an easy two-point conversion. Selwyn Abrahamson darted for a 72-yard touchdown run, with Tony Dall completing the two-point conversion to bring us 8-0 within a couple of minutes. Our smash-mouth defense, again, contained Covington, giving way to another power run by Gabriel Paulone, which resulted in 54 yards gained. Touchdown; two-point conversion. By halftime, we were up 42-0. Our 2nd string players gained a lot of game time experience in the second half. The end result was 58-6. The following players contributed tremendously: Selwyn Abrahamson, 11 carries for 168 yards; Gabriel Paulone, 10 carries for 160 yards; Jarvis Beaver, 8 carries for 37 yards; Tony Dall, 3 carries for 29 yards; Keren Martinez-Cruz 2 carries for 26 yards; Tony Slone, 1 carry for 5 yards; Tyler Crace, 1 carry for 7 yards. A.J. Christian had 2 receptions for 82 yards and 2 touchdowns; Abrahamson had 1 reception for 54 yards resulting in a touchdown; Jarvis Beaver had 1 reception for 16 yards resulting in a touchdown. Gabriel Paulone was 9 for 15, 213 yards and 4 touchdowns. All our offensive players executed in such a near-perfect manner; however, we easily produced 9 penalties for 60 yards. Our offense yardage: 434 rushing yards, and 213 passing yards, resulting in a total of 647 offense yards. Our commanding defense pounded Covington, and created a total of 103 team tackles, including a couple of sacks, forced fumbles, and hurries. Covington plays against tough teams on their schedule, including 2A Seeger, and 2A South Vermillion, of which teams have played against other 3A and 4A schools.

September 14: Wes-Del

Wes-Del visited us last Friday for our fifth game of the season. A big battle ensued between two great teams in the first half. Wes-Del scored a touchdown in the first quarter, but failed a 2-point conversion attempt. They grabbed the lead early in the game, but our players fought back on offense as Gabriel Paulone rushed to give us our first touchdown of the game. A two-point conversion followed, and we were up 8-6 by the second quarter. Wes-Del did not give up easily, as their star running back blazed past our defense backs, earning them another touchdown. Again, they failed a 2-point conversion, making the score 12-8 by halftime. As soon as our players got back on the field, fire emanated from the players' eyes, and our offensive team attempted to score two touchdowns but were canceled out due to penalties. However, we did not give up and kept scoring touchdowns, all by Gabriel Paulone, and one long pass touchdown from Paulone to A.J. Christian. Our rigorous, hard-nosed defense shut Wes-Del out the entire second half, leaving them to score nothing. We ended the game with class, and a score of 30-12, giving us a 3-game winning streak. Paulone rushed for 209 yards and had 3 touchdowns, and A.J. Christian caught a long pass for a touchdown. Our defense forced fumbles, quarterback pressure and hurries, and plenty of earth-shaking tackles and sacks. We enjoyed playing against Wes-Del, and they are a very good, consistent team. Our respect goes out to Wes-Del players and coaches, as some players sustained injuries.

September 9: Alabama Deaf

Indiana Deaf opened up with a dominating defense at Alabama's home field. We played hard defense and shut them down on their first possession. Our first possession gave way to a rocket-style touchdown by Selwyn Abrahamson, who rushed for 14 yards to give us a 6-0 lead. From there, our offense and defense just kept dominating the game. By the end of the first quarter, we were at a 22-0 lead. By halftime, we led 42-0. Jarvis Beaver, Selwyn Abrahamson, and A.J. Christian gained touchdowns to give us a 42-0 lead by halftime. The second half proved to be just as dominating. Gabriel Paulone rushed for a touchdown, Jose Mast caught a 20 yard touchdown pass from Paulone, and Terris Hazzard caught two touchdown passes totalling 35 yards. We ended the game pounding Alabama Deaf 72-6. Alabama had not caught any passes; they were 0 for 6. Alabama only had 28 carries for 107 yards. We had 35 carries for 346 yards and 192 total passing yards. We finally knocked down our penalties - 2 for 25 yards. Gabriel Paulone passed 9 for 16 for 178 yards. Backup QB Tyler Crace passed 1 for 1 for 14 yards and that pass was a TD pass. Selwyn Abrahamson had 16 carries for 206 yards and had 3 TDs. Beaver had 3 carries for 52 yards and a TD. Overall, our team played the best and with heart.

August 31: Union Dugger

Indiana Deaf pounded Union Dugger 50-28 for a dominating win. Union Dugger is the second smallest school in the state of Indiana, right above the Deaf Hoosiers. They held claim to a 13-year winning streak against us, and we were finally able to break that streak for the first time in Indiana Deaf vs. Union Dugger history. During the 13-year losing streak, Indiana Deaf had great athletes: Waymon Watkins, Rodney Lewis, Onye Davis, Robert Haney, and more; however, we now finally have the athletes we need to break the losing streak. We hosted Union Dugger and opened up on our overpowering defense. Shutting them down on their first possession, we barged ahead with Jarvis Beaver and Selwyn Abrahamson charging forward with the ball. We immediately created a touchdown (Abrahamson) and a two-point conversion (Paulone) followed, resulting in an immediate 8-0 lead. By halftime, we were up 22-14. In the second half, we played an explosive game and gained many touchdowns with successful two-point conversions. Overall, Senior Selwyn Abrahamson had 23 carries for 246 yards, including three touchdowns from 1, 65, and 5 yard rushes. Junior Gabriel Paulone added 113 yards on 11 carries. Paulone had two rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns. Senior A.J. Christian caught two touchdown passes from Paulone, resulting in 74 yards combined (one for 64 yards, one for 10 yards). Paulone was 6 of 9 for 123 yards passing. Our defense created sacks, fumbles, and hurries. We maintained pressure on UD's quarterback. We shut down their rushing and passing game. They did gain a few touchdowns against us, and that is because of our penalties. We had 17 penalties for 187 yards, and that is something we as coaches are not proud of and an important factor we will need to work on. However, we played an outstanding, dominating game against Union Dugger, shutting down their winning streak against us.

August 24: Lutheran

Game stopped at halftime due to a bad storm.

August 17: Park Tudor

Indiana Deaf played versus Park Tudor, a team ranked 10th in the State under 1A teams. We played on their new grassy turf and played a hard and long game. An explosive first half, Park Tudor gained two touchdowns before we were able to score. Quarterback Paulone dashed a left sweep to create our first touchdown. What followed was a failed PAT attempt. Regardless, our team was fired up and had control of Park Tudor's possession and shut them down. The next possession we had, Halfback Abrahamson and Slotback Beaver charged forward gaining us several short yardage rushes that brought us to the end zone. Wide Receiver Mast caught a bullet pass from Paulone for a touchdown, bringing us 12-20, trailing Park Tudor. Paulone utilized a keep and plowed towards the end zone for a successful two-point conversion, with seconds remaining in the first half. At halftime, we trailed 14-20. Coming back into the second half, our boys just couldn't hold Park Tudor. They scored two more touchdowns and held us scoreless. We fought long and hard; however, team fatique and team turnovers cost us. The game ended 14-34, with Park Tudor claiming the victory. Park Tudor Coach Tom Page stated that we played a hard game with a lot of heart, and that he'll be keeping an eye on our team throughout the season. Indiana Deaf Coach Mike Paulone relayed the message to the team, making sure that the boys keep their heads up. We will be playing Lutheran this coming Friday at Indiana Deaf, of whom is ranked 10th in the State under 1A as well.
