Athletics: HS Football: 2006 Varsity Football: Recap

September 29:Edinburgh
Tony Slone scored two touchdowns on runs of 74 and 55 yards and finished the night with 183 yards. Gabriel Paulone led the aerial attack with 115 yards passing and ran in for another touchdown. Anthony Christian and Jose Mast each had one long reception that went for distances (31 and 58 yards). Each player chipped in beautifully as the offense paved their way to 389 total yards.

The defense smothered the opening holes all night and had their way with Edinburgh's offense. The boys held them to 156 total yards. The defense defended well enough to earn the first shut out victory of the season.

September 23: MSSD
We beat ourselves by allowing MSSD to convert the big plays. Put the big plays aside, the outcome would have fared differently. I'm proud of our boys, because they did not let down nor let the game slip away from them. They held their heads high and competed throughout the game. Hipolito DeLuna scored on a screen pass play right before game time expired in the first half. He scored again on a rushing play.

September 15: Wes-Del
We played a great team, Wes Del, last Friday. They played the game to perfection. We made many unnecessary mistakes that led to easy scores for them. The final score was 51 to 8 in Wes Del's favor. Our boys showed a lot of heart by playing hard. Hipolito DeLuna scored the lone touchdown on a 3 yard run.

September 9: Alabama SD
Our boys played Alabama triumphantly and finished the game with a decisive victory. The result was shocking for Alabama, because we were battered severely by them last year. That game was already decided before the game reached second quarter. Our boys made sure we wouldn't get clobbered again. Here is how last Saturday game unfolded...

On the very first offense possession, we did great by doing what we do best... playing smash mouth -style football. Our linemen did awesome by creating spacious running lanes down the throat of th Alabama defense. We held the ball for almost 7 minutes and scored a touchdown. That possession boosted our confidence and helped us discover a swagger.

Alabama offense is well-known for its speed and fitness. Our defense did an excellent job by forcing them to do differently. Alabama was forced to play an air game. Our cornerbacks and safeties were up for the challenge. All in all, we limited them to 57 total net yards.

Individual Accomplishment:
Jarvis Beaver - 15 carries for 75 yards and 1 touchdown
Tony Slone - 22 carries for 192 yards and 2 touchdowns
Gabriel Paulone - 2 interceptions

August 25: Lutheran
We lost to a better team last Friday, 39 to 8. Lutheran team is entering their second year, and we expect them to excel at a higher level of competition in few years from now. Our boys competed with them, nose to nose until the end of game. There were many golden opportunities that we did not convert. Our boys deserve a round of applause for their effort and dignity. The boys vow to learn from that game and become better. Tony Slone and few others played a great ball game. They carried their younger teammates on their back and showed them what it takes to become a hard hitting team.

August 11: Lions Sports Club
All players contributed well and gave us a victory last Friday. Our offense linemen did great. They created many lanes for our backs to run through. The backs made many good reads that resulted in positive rushing yardages. The wide receivers executed well and made plays when needed. Our defense dominated the line of scrimmage. We forced turnovers and made many stops. All in all, we played great "team ball" football last Friday.
