February 3 Homecoming: Illinois SD
JV Boy's Basketball - Illinois Dominates Over Young Deaf Hoosiers on the Boards at Homecoming
The young Deaf Hoosiers (8-5) suffered a 55-34 loss to a strong rival Illinois at ISD homecoming, last Saturday afternoon. Again, there was another different starting lineup for the Deaf Hoosiers with only 8 players suited up for the game due to several reasons. They encountered struggles to box out for rebounds defensively in the paint.
The game opened with both defenses playing with great intensity, but Illinois took a 13-10 lead in the first quarter. The sign of struggling had showed in the second quarter as Illinois dominated offensive rebounds in the paint, extending their lead 28-14 at half-time.
The Deaf Hoosiers refueled themselves to keep the score close with 10-10 in the third quarter but Illinois maintained to keep the lead 38-24. Illinois continued to convert our bad pass turnovers on the fast break in the final period of the game with the score of 17-10. The Deaf Hoosiers were physically worn out and energy sapped from boxing out defensively.
Coach Westhoelter told the team that the two biggest factors in the loss were offensive rebounding and turnovers. Illinois has more offensive rebounds than our total team rebounds, but they outscored the Deaf Hoosiers on the offensive glass.
Dual Freshmen Ryan Dibble and Ryan Catron led the Deaf Hoosiers in points with 10 each, while Sophomore point guard Jose Mast followed with 6 points. Junior shooting guard Chris Schuitema scored 5 points. Dibble collected 8 rebounds while his team had 10 rebounds total. The boys played very hard from start to finish, but the turnovers and offensive rebounds were ultimately too much for them to overcome.
February 1: White's
JV Boy's Deaf Hoosiers Notch Win Over White's Institute
Superb Freshman Ryan Dibble dominated the floor and was unstoppable in the paint leading the young Deaf Hoosiers to a win over White's Institute, 50-29. Dibble had a career high 26 points and 12 rebounds including 8 offensive rebounds.
After a sluggish few minutes in the first quarter, leading 6-4, the Deaf Hoosiers built a double digit lead to end it 10-4. They led by as many as 10 points in the second quarter, 18-8, before taking a 9-point advantage into half-time. Overall, the Deaf Hoosiers outscored White's 40-25 over the final three quarters including 14 points in the 4th period. With a new starting lineup for the Deaf Hoosiers, the coach stated that both teams came out a little sluggish but we managed to make some adjustments on offense starting in the second quarter and really picked it up in the second half to do really well. Dibble had a big game as the coach has set high expectations for him. We needed a game like that from him to get him going. Sophomore Point Guard Jose Mast did a good job to keep the team in poise and a lot is being expected from him as well. Mast had 5 points including a trey and dished 6 assists.
The reserves from the bench got a lot of playing action on the court with great enthusiasm. The team's intensity was good as our zone offense was clicking pretty well. Freshman Daniel Davis scored 10 points and collected 5 rebounds while his teammate Freshman Guard/Forward Ryan Catron unselfishly netted 5 points and did an excellent job feeding to his teammates, especially Dibble, scoring a career-high 7 assists. Another Freshman Forward Robert Goolsby and Junior Guard Chris Schuitema, who was recovering from a mild flu, had 2 points each. We are getting better as a team and continue to learn to play the game with passion.
January 30: Indy Metro Academy
Turnovers Cost Young Deaf Hoosiers Loss Against Indy Metro
The young Deaf Hoosiers (7-4) committed a season-high 30 turnovers and lost to visiting team Indy Metro (6-2), a new private charter school from the west side of the Indianapolis area. We only had 7 players dressed for the game. The young Deaf Hoosiers were unable to put the ball above the rim as they felt the basket was capped in a first quarter shut out while Indy Metro took charge with a 10-0 lead. In the second quarter, we were able to shatter the cap on the basket and scored 6 points. Indy Metro still continued to convert our miscued turnovers to lead into half-time 17-6. The Deaf Hoosiers looked to make a second half comeback but our defense had too many open lanes for them to spark a 10-0 run in the opening of the third quarter. They could not slow down as Indy Metro created numerous scoring opportunities from our Deaf Hoosiers' turnovers and their strong shooting performance. They simply demolished us in the second half and outscored the Deaf Hoosiers, 36-14. Freshman center Ryan Dibble led all scorers with 8 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Freshman Ryan Catron and Junior Chris Schuitema netted 6 points points each and were the only 2 out of 3 players in the scoring logs.
The young Deaf Hoosiers need to relax more and do a better job keeping their composure. They really struggled offensively as it was a major factor that definitely needs more work.
January 23: Lutheran
Frustrated Young Hoosiers Lose to Lutheran
Playing without top JV scorer Junior Selwyn Abrahamson, who recently received approval from IHSAA that he is eligible to play at the Varsity level, the young Hoosiers (7-3) lost on the road, 41-17, to a strong Lutheran team that consisted of virtually a class of juniors on the roster. As a result of a fast-growing school, Lutheran has three HS basketball Teams: freshman, junior varisty and varsity. The young Hoosiers jumped out quickly defensively as we scored 5 points during the first 4 and half minutes of the 1st quarter. Lutheran regained their confidence to put forth a 6-0 run and took a 6-5 lead in the first quarter. Lutheran then scored 13-5 in the second quarter to close out the half with a 19-10 advantage. Our frustrated young Hooisers' shots weren't going in the basket and were negated because the ball was on the rim. In the third quarter, we were shut out because of turnovers and no execution on offense. We gradually improved to score a quarter-high of 7 points, but it was not enough to close the game in the final quarter. Junior Chris Schuitema led the team in scoring with 4 points on a fastbreak. Sophomore Gabriel Guerrero netted in 3 points while Ryan Catron had 3 points and 6 rebounds. A trio class of freshmen Ryan Dibble, Joshua Ralstin and Robert Goolsby clipped in 2 points each.
January 18: University
Catron, Davis Lead Young Hoosiers Past University
The young Hoosiers' (6-2) defense did not allow a double digit lead in all four quarters as we rallied a win against University, 42-27. The freshman duo led by Ryan Catron and Daniel Davis with 12 and 11 points respectively. Catron finished a season high with 12 rebounds while Davis had 6. It was the third rematch against Unviersity with a series of 1-1 prior to the game. In the opening of the game, the two teams played evenly for the first quarter and ended with us up 8-7. The Deaf Hoosiers gradually responded with a 4-0 run in the final minutes of the second quarter to take a 19-14 lead at halftime. Junior Selwyn Abrahamson pushed to increase the lead on a fastbreak and a conventional three-point play on a 7-0 run. He finished the game with 8 points and 5 boards before all the bench warmers got an opportinity to see some action on the floor. In the fourth quarter, there was some rust shown due to the long layoff from the winter break. However, the subs showed some improvements with ball movement regardless of several turnovers made on bad passes. Chris Schuitema contributed 5 points including perfect free-throws, 3-3. Freshman Joshua Ralstin played his best game of the season scoring 4 points and seizing 4 rebounds. The coach applauded him for his hard work in yesterday's practice. Another freshman, Robert Goosby, netted in 2 points. We are still a young team and haven't played much time together due to recovery from the long winter break.
January 16: Columbus Christian
JV Hoosiers Win in Overtime on the Road
Junior Guard/Forward Selwyn Abrahamson hit a tough winning shot to help the JV Hoosiers' basketball team register a 42-41 overtime victory over Columbia Christian. With the win, the team improved to 6-2 on the season. Since the young Hoosiers returned from a two week winter break, we only had one practice due to coaches gone to attend the Clerc Classic at MSSD in Washington, D.C. We performed sluggishly at the start as we missed easy basket opportunities, with 4-9 Columbus Christian taking advantage on the opening first quarter. We battled back to knot the game at 13-13 when Chris Schuitema scored a trey off the bench. A three-play play by Abrahamson made the score 16-16 and the young Hoosiers closed the two point lead at the half-time, 20-18. In the second half both teams continued to trade baskets back and forth to keep the game tight. Within the final seconds of the game, Jose Mast scored an easy lay-up from a steal to take the lead 37-34. But right at the end, Columbus Christian buried a three-pointer to tie the game at 37-37. In the extra session, Freshman Ryan Catron gave the Deaf Hoosiers a 39-37 advantage but the opponent countered with two lay-ups to take a lead of the game 41-39. Freshman Center Ryan Dibble was fouled inside offensively and made 1 out 2 free-throws with us down by one, 40-41. Sophomore point guard Jose Mast made a key steal and called a time-out for coach to design a winning basket with 17 seconds. Abrahamson's winning shot was penetrated to the paint and tipped in the basket over two defenders with 2 seconds left on the clock and ISD full court press to preverse the win for the young Hoosiers. Abrahamson led the team in scoring with 16 points and rebounding with 10. He also had 5 assist and 3 steals. Catron clipped his game high with 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Schuitema had a solid game with 7 points while point guard Mast scored 4 points. Dibble chipped in 5 points. The coach stated that we weren't playing poorly, we were just rushed and not mentally tough due to the long layoff.
January 9: University
Young Hoosiers Fall at University HS, 30-45
The young Hoosiers returned from a two weeks winter break and suffered its second loss of the team dropping a 45-30 decision to University High School's B team at their court. In spite of only one full practice, we were able to get open looks during the entire game, but were unable to convert the field goals as we shot poorly. Untimely turnovers and University's second half full court press created numerous turnovers and cost us. After winning the opening tip, we struck first basket, but University struck back with two quick scores. The University took a first quarter lead 9-7 and continued to increase their lead at the halftime, 21-13 as they capitalized on our turnovers. In the second half, we tried to snap the drought with consistent scoring but their full court pressure rallied the score. The final quarter of the game, we finally found our groove and played better tying the score for the quarter 11-11 including team 6 for 6 team free throws. However, it was not enough to cut the deficit and we were never able to pull it out. Deaf Hoosiers (5-2) were led by Selwyn Abrahamson who finished with 8 points. He also added 7 rebounds, 2 assists and a charge taken. Dual freshmen Ryan Dibble chipped in 8 points for his season-high and seized 5 boards, while Ryan Catron had 6 points and 6 rebounds. Junior Chris Schuitema scored 4 points on lay-ups.
December 13: Eminenece
Young JV Deaf Hoosiers Hold Off Eminence
The JV Deaf Hoosiers (5-1) posted a 41-38 win over Eminence at Caskey Gymnasium avenging last year's loss where we were crushed with the score of 18-60. Selwyn Abrahamson scored 14 points and with an unanticipated fouling out late in the fourth quarter, he finished with 8 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists, 1 blocked shot and 1 charge taken. In the first quarter, we jumped ahead with quick momentum to a 18-6 advantage including Chris Schuitema's baseline 3 point shot at the buzzer that was made by a good pass from Ryan Catron from the sideline. Chris tied his career high of the season with 11 points and had 3 steals. With some line-up adjustment in the second quarter, we managed to hold the lead to half-time 27-20. Coming out of the locker room, we made some miscued turnovers but survived with an 8-6 advance in the third quarter. Eminence, however, grabbed the momentum in the final quarter of the game, outscoring us by a 12-6 margin. They had several chances down the stretch, but freshman Ryan Catron who shifted from forward position to point guard position cooled off their full court press momentum by running the clock down. Ryan buried the key free-throws 3-6 in the final crucial minutes and finished with 8 points and 6 rebounds. Freshman Tony Dall paced himself with 4 points, dished out 5 assists to his teammates and had 4 steals as he played only two quarters due to preserving some quarters for the varsity game. Freshman Robert Goolsby clipped in 3 points.
December 12: First Assembly Christian Academy
Dall, Abrahamson Score Career Highs as JV Tops FACA
Freshman Anthony Dall scored a career-high 18 points to lead the young JV Deaf Hoosiers past the visiting First Assembly Christian Academy (FACA), 48-42. Junior Selwyn Abrahamson added a career-high 17 points for the Deaf Hoosiers (4-1), who played only 2 quarters extending our wins to 3 games in a row. We took control in the first quarter, 12-2 with a steady defense, holding FACA only a basket in the final seconds of the quarter. We continued to build our offense surging into the second quarter to turn a 25-8 halftime advantage. In the third quarter, FACA came out with a quick 4-0 layups before a team timeout to recharge our focus and mentality. We finally played impressive defense to close the quarter with a 16-6 run. In spite of the height advantage of several of FACA's players, the boys did an excellent job boxing out their opponents in the paint. With a 41-18 lead and the starting five on the bench in the open fourth quarter, the bench warmers had quality minutes of playing time on the court. We have struggled with scoring and turnovers for much of the season with the younger players. FACA took charge and dominated in their paint terrority with a 24-7 run in the final quarter of the game. Ryan Catron had 6 points, 2 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and more important, on defense he drew a charge. Chris Schuitema netted 3 points. Daniel Davis and Ryan Dibble chipped in a basket each. The boys displayed excellent sportsmanship and class on the court which pleased the coach. The starters did a really good job, playing unselfishly well together. The best part was our team defense and putting good pressure on the ball. That made a huge difference.
December 6: University
JV Hoosiers Topple University
Behind freshman point guard Anthony Dall's 7 points and 5 assists debut, the young Junior Varsity Deaf Hoosiers (3-1) defeated University JV-C team, 47-32 at their expanding campus. Dall, who is currently on the varsity roster, is under the coach's tutelage to become an effective vocal leader on the floor running the offense as he learns the role and responsibilities of a solid point guard. Junior guard Selwyn Abrahamson scored 12 points on 6 for 7 shooting and had 5 steals with limited playing time action. In the open of the first quarter, we advanced 16-7 which gave the second stringers an oppportunity to play in the second quarter. After playing the whole second quarter, we lost our focus and managed to score only one basket with many unforced turnovers. In the second half, the first team quad jumped out to start a 10-0 run with full court defense pressure, and never trailed against them. Freshman center Daniel Davis had a career high with 10 points. Freshman forward Joshua Ralstin came off the bench to score 4 points. Ryan Catron who consistently played well had 6 points and grabbed a team high 6 boards. The bench players also had a lot of action on the court. In spite of allowing University 6 treys (18 points), our defense still needs work for a fierce mindset on the court.
December 1: Morton Memorial
JV Boys Run Past Morton Memorial
Junior forward Kirk Winkler nailed a career-high 22 points to lead the young JV Hoosiers to a 59-43 victory over visiting Morton Memorial at ISD. Newcomer Selwyn Abrahamson from Riverside, CA, continued to play well for his second game in a row and contributed 16 points and 5 boards to help the Deaf Hoosiers (2-1) to a win. In the opening of the first quarter, we took a 16-6 lead but struggled to keep the pace with Morton Memorial in the second quarter despite some hot shooting of their own. They took a 25-24 lead at halftime, therefore, we had to make some adjustments on defense with more pressure. We came out of the break struggling to match their fast break lay-ups performace in the first half, and dominated in the final quarter with 21-8. Freshman Catron continued to play a solid game in both offense and defense as he had 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 assists. Chris Schuitema and Gabriel Guerrero threw in 4 points each. Twin freshman towers Ryan Dibble and Daniel Davis scored 4 points each in the paint. In spite of a game high 25 turnovers, we also need to improve on passing fundamentals.
November 28: Liberty Christian
JV Boys Lose to Liberty Christian
Junior forward Kirk Winker tallied the JV Deaf Hoosiers (1-1) with a team high 12 points and 5 rebounds in the 42-33 loss against Liberty Christian on our home court. In the first half it was a back and forth battle from beginning to end, but Liberty Christian took an advantage with our many miscued turnovers and led 15 - 10 at halftime. In the third quarter our offense transition had been quiet but netted 4 points while they had 13. In the final quarter we outscored them with 19-14 but it was not enough to close the game with a win. Junior guard Selwyn Abrahamson scored 6 points and pulled down 5 rebounds. Ryan Catron had a superb defense game as he pulled down 11 boards and had 3 steals. The twin freshman postplayers Ryan Dibble and Daniel Davis bucked 4 points each. We need to keep working on fixing our offense which needs much improvement. We are not pressuring the ball like we have been in practice. It is just a matter of desire and we need to get that corrected.
November 21: Tindley
JV Boys Earn A Season-Opener Win
Our JV boys earned a win to avenge last year's loss to Tindley who beat us by 20 points on their home court. We made a 14-3 jump start in the first quarter and limited their team to only 2 free-throws in the second quarter. Leading 20-5 at halftime, we continued to play well in the second half with all of the players getting a lot of playing time. Kirk Winkler led the team in scoring with 18 points and grabbed a team high of 7 rebounds and 7 steals. Chris Schuitema scored 11 points with 3 for 4 free throws. Rookie Ryan Catron clipped in 6 points while Anthony Hommel had 5 points. Coach Paul Maucere was pleased to see the progress of the team, but we still need to polish our offense and defense. |
